An Open Letter to Tony Wheeler
I remember my first Lonely Planet. I bought it, India, months before I left. It was purple with a cow on the cover and it weighed more than a bible. I didn’t as much use it during the trip as I read it before; I dreamed and that book helped build my dreams; I pictured that massive country over and over and I felt no intimidation about going. I was 20 and that trip changed my life. When I returned, the book had become water logged in Goa for I stayed there a month, in a hammock, under the waving palm trees, listening to the waves roll in and out. I still have it; the pages crinkle when I turn them and when I turn them I still dream.
It is a grand occupation: writing, travel writing, travelling. I couldn’t think of much else I would rather do. Tony and Maureen Wheeler, I admire you, for travelling is what you get to do. . . and writing about it, you do that too.
The world is a big place but travelling brings the myriad into light. We have been given a great privilege, to see; travelling helps us see better. It is a very obvious that Generous Alphabet should write a letter to you: doing what you want in life and by the off-shoot there came success.
So, Tony Wheeler, what do you say? Wouldn’t a lovely little ‘L’ make your day?
