Short Now
“Ideally, it would do for thinking about time what the photographs of Earth from space have done for thinking about the environment. Such icons reframe the way people think.”
…
“The Clock’s works consist of a binary digital-mechanical system which is so accurate and revolutionary that we have patented several of its elements.”
While I admire the Long Now Project, isn’t it silly to speak of patents with the same breath used to speak about a 10,000-year clock designed to help people in “…thinking, understanding, and acting responsibly over long periods of time.”?
Are patents not in direct opposition to the “Ally with competition” and
“Take no sides” guidelines for a long-lived, long-valuable institution?
Nevertheless it is a truly epic project. And here’s another beautiful clock.
